SEPTIC INFORMATION is at your fingertips.

Did you know that in Crystal Lake Township, every property has its own wells, and its own sewage system?  We have no government-supplied public water delivery nor no government sewage removal.

Did you also know that Michigan, the state with the longest freshwater coastline, is also the only state NOT to have state-wide septic review legislation? In Michigan, septic system monitoring is entirely up to local jurisdiction.

In Benzie County we have many townships that don't require any septic monitoring at all.  (At one point in the past there was a non-binding agreement between several Northeast Michigan counties to monitor this threat to our waterways, but special interest concerns resulted in Leelanau and Manistee Counties withdrawing from that.) Because if you have developed property in Crystal Lake Township you have a septic tank, you might want to become better educated as to what having your own sewage treatment system entails.  Towards that end, Septic Smart Week is Sept. 15-19th, 2025 and aims to raise awareness of effective septic management among the 1.3 million Michigan residents whose wastewater is treated by a septic system.  As your local government, we encourage to learn more about proper use and routine care of septic systems to help homeowners avoid costly repairs and protect the health of groundwater, lakes and streams. Find more resources for local governments on septic education on the SepticSmart webpage.
