Fire Department & First Responders
Instead of financing and maintaining its own, Crystal Lake Township (CLT) is served contractually by the Frankfort Fire Department. We are fortunate. The cost and energy of hosting one's own fire department would further encumber CLT's resources. Allowing us to just pay for our fair share of maintaining Frankfort's department makes good fiscal and bureaucratic sense.
In 1990, CLT voted to create a special fire district millage. This, in essence, allows the CLT Board to regulate fire millage funds as it sees fit, without having to go to the electorate every time for an approval. Accordingly, there is a current assessment, which appears on your winter property tax statement of 0.5 mils (or .50 for every $1000 of your property's taxable value). This raises the annual monies needed for the township's fire protection and first responders. If you are interested, below are documents which pertain to our contract, the budget, and the services provided to CLT. Want to know how many times the Fire Department and First Responders were called out for CLT residents and property owners? Especially interesting is the list of fire runs! |
DNR Reminds Those Burning Leaves to Get a Burn PermitTownship residents wishing to burn falls leaves generally need a burn permit. For the Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Peninsula, residents can visit Michigan.gov/BurnPermit or call 866-922-BURN to find out whether burning is currently allowed by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Southern Lower Peninsula residents can obtain burn permits from their local government or fire department. For responsible burning information, contact Paul Rogers at 616-260-8406.
